Bilingual Post-Secondary Career and Entrepreneurship Day

BILINGUAL POST-SECONDARY CAREER AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP DAY

The Bilingual Post-secondary Career and Entrepreneurship Day is a biennial event organized by HORIZON TNL where students from French high schools and French immersion programs have the opportunity to visit information booths on the different types of bilingual jobs available at businesses in the region.

In 2018, the 6th edition of the event in the eastern region was held at the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay and the Stephenville YMCA hosted the very first JOCBE event in the western region.

This event provides an opportunity for students in grades 9 through 12 to ask the various exhibitors questions and to explore diverse bilingual career options, including medicine, journalism, teaching, and positions with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Government of Canada.

« Meeting bilingual professionals and entrepreneurs who have chosen to use both official languages in their day-to-day work will allow young people in Newfoundland and Labrador to better understand the importance of preserving French, even in a province like ours with 95.1% of the population not speaking French, as well as to become aware of the opportunities that come with it.»

Samir Jaouadi,, Economic Development Officer for the Eastern Region at HORIZON TNL, and organizer of the 2016, 2018 and 2021 events.

In total, the two events in 2018, held in Torbay and Stephenville, attracted 71 exhibitors and welcomed 753 students from 18 high schools.

The Bilingual Post-secondary Career and Entrepreneurship Day 2018 was made possible with the financial support of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador (the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation (TCAR)) and the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Skills and Labour (AESL)), the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and the Government of Quebec’s Secrétariat aux relations canadiennes (SQRC), through financial support programs for Canadian Francophone communities.
